Reuse of raw materials is increasingly important for Landal GreenParks

Landal GreenParks strives for holidays with a positive impact on nature, region, people and climate. Landal builds as sustainably as possible in new construction and renovation of bungalows and chooses various applications of recycled and recyclable products for the design. Landal GreenParks will collaborate with Electrolux – parent company of the AEG and Zanussi brands – to ensure that household products in the holiday bungalows last as long as possible. It is one of the holiday provider's many initiatives to be completely climate neutral by 2030.

Kettles, coffee makers, televisions, vacuum cleaners, refrigerators, ovens, dishwashers: many household appliances can be found in the bungalows at the parks. Often from different brands and suppliers and not always energy efficient and recyclable. Landal decided to launch a procurement tender to stimulate the circularity of household appliances, so that they last a long time, use little energy, but above all are repairable and parts and materials can be recycled to a high standard at the end of their useful life. Electrolux won the tender and will supply all household appliances, but the partnership goes further than just having the equipment installed. The Landal GreenParks cleaning service will periodically run a cleaning and descaling cycle in the dishwashers and employees at the parks will be trained to carry out minor repairs themselves. In addition, guests are made aware of how they can best use the devices.

Anneke Mezger, Director Facilities & Projects at Landal GreenParks: “Electrolux was chosen because they are the most circular company in the field of kitchen appliances and white goods. Although discarded equipment is generally only partly returned to the supplier as a raw material via Wecycle, fortunately there are frontrunners in the industry with an interesting vision and a plan to move towards fully circular products.

In the new construction and renovation of holiday homes, more and more reusable and recycled raw materials and materials are being used, in addition to numerous energy-saving measures.
For example, during the construction of 74 new gas-free homes at Landal Mont Royal in 2018, the foundations of the demolished original bungalows were crushed on site and reused in the new foundation. For example, 80% of the material from the old bungalows was reused. By not having to dispose of demolition waste and by supplying new building materials, a lot of transport energy has also been saved. Wooden furniture in the holiday homes is made from recycled teak and oak.
The carpet in the bedrooms is made from discarded fishing nets and is fully recyclable
and the floors, which are also recyclable, are made of PVC and partly made of recycled material.

At Landal Twenhaarsveld, several holiday bungalows have had a green makeover, opting for a sustainable design with recycled or recyclable products.

      • For example, Inter-GreeN paint was used, which is produced from reclaimed paint residues, combined with pure sustainable raw materials.

      • The kitchen cabinets consist of a top and bottom layer of BalanceBoard: an FSC chipboard, between which a granulate of annual crops, such as grass, flax or the remains of maize plants has been pressed.

      • The ceiling insulation consists of mats made from recycled old newspapers.

In addition, circular applications are being implemented at a large number of Landal GreenParks parks:

      • A modular sofa was developed, which is completely 'degradable'; the design takes into account that the sofa can be easily dismantled at the end of the use phase, or in the meantime. As a result, material flows can be easily separated and the sofa can be reused for at least 80%. The sofa is made of four materials that are easy to distinguish from each other: wood, metal, foam and fabric. Smart assembly means that parts can be easily dismantled for cleaning, maintenance or replacement.

      • Auping developed a circular bed for the leisure sector: the Auping Revive, which feels and looks like a luxury box spring and is produced in a sustainable manner. Thanks to the smart packaging and modular construction, the bed is easier to transport, so that 3 times as many Auping Revive beds fit in a truck. That means fewer transport kilos and CO2 emissions.

      • Fibers are made from used and collected (soft) drink PET bottles, which are used in curtains and duvets, where they have the same insulating and moisture-regulating properties as other synthetic duvets, but with a much lower impact on the environment . rPET is a very good alternative to traditional synthetic or down fillings.

      • Special is the reuse of coffee grounds from the park restaurants of Landal GreenParks. A specialized company turns this coffee grounds into a unique breeding ground for the cultivation of oyster mushrooms. Landal then buys them back to process them in dishes.
